| Summary: The focus of this Workshop in Cultural and Language Learning is the exploration of cultural bias faced across Europe. It is aimed primarily at disadvantaged learners - seeking employment or self employment in their home country - wishing to improve their learning and relate it to their vocational development - widening their horizons in order to improve their life and career opportunities - engage in further learning - improve their understanding of cultural bias and differences - improve their understanding of English - enhance wellbeing, confidence and self esteem in a supportive environment. The training will include development in English language skills. Learners will have an opportunity to meet and share existing experiences with those from other countries and cultures and to plan together for the future. Support will be given throughout the application and registration process. Accommodation and meals will be provided and all travel to and from Cambridge will be arranged by the organisers. |
| OUTCOMES FOR WORKSHOP PARTICIPANTS Participants will gain primarily in skills and confidence to operate in a multi-cultural European environment and be better able to contribute to their own wellbeing. Individuals will vary in the benefits they obtain but are likely to be as follows: A set of action plans set in a European context leading to: - engagement in further learning, - improved prospects both social and for employment, - greater confidence to engage better in their own locality - wider appreciation of European culture and language - self leadership and team skills - greater motivation to learn and develop - enhanced problem solving skills - improved ability to use and understand the English language Progress towards the following competences: - Communication in the mother tongue; By communicating with other European nationals and country colleagues in new travel and learning situations and through working as international teams they will form new thoughts and gain further skills. - Communication in foreign languages; Participants will gain further skills in learning to listen, read, write and speak in English and will gain an insight of the other languages of the participants - Learning to learn; The methodology of the workshop will encourage learning and feedback and review will complete the action learning loop. Learning will occur in the new situations and projects which are planned. Participants will acquire new motivation and ambition for themselves, leading to further learning. - Social and civic competences; By becoming representatives of their country and culture through workshop participation, individuals will gain respect for themselves and their cultural differences. The workshop will develop ways to escape from disadvantage and influence their peer groups in their home countries. They will also recognise their wider European citizenship. - Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship; By undertaking international travel, participating in the workshop and the inherent practical projects, individuals will improve their initiative and a platform for their own creativity and sense of enterprise, albeit in a supported environment. - Cultural awareness and expression; A fundamental part of the workshop focuses on cultural education. Participants will learn of cultural biases and differences, recognise their own culture, learn to cope with difference and to operate in other cultural contexts |

| DAY 3 | USING NEW SKILLS Practical exercises/tasks in Cambridge Using and practising skills in real situations with support (for example, basic interviews, product purchases, ordering refreshments, organising evening social event) Initial briefing Selecting tasks/projects Planning in small mixed nation teams Agreeing tasks Completion of tasks as small teams, using skills acquired, working with other European nationals and their cultural biases, gaining confidence, self leadership and problem solving skills. | DAY 5 | INDIVIDUAL OBJECTIVES AND ACTION PLANS Review and identification of learning from Day 4 visits Introduction to online learning platform, Moodle, in order to: - help participants log on and build a personal profile - introduce them to the key functions and show how they can use it after the course to find out information, keep in touch, ask questions etc. Setting own objectives Individual action plans Commitment and resources required WORKSHOP REVIEW AND EVALUATION (fun) Learning game Final workshop evaluation, completion of questionnaires on all workshop aspects, meeting of individual and group expectations.
